Mission Directive · 2026
Reversing the greatest genetic loss in Indian history.
India has lost over 1.10 lakh traditional rice varieties since the Green Revolution. Beej Bharat is the coordinated response — a national protocol for seed preservation, farmer empowerment, and agricultural intelligence.
The Crisis
Between 1900 and today, an estimated 75% of India's crop genetic diversity has vanished from farms. Landrace varieties — bred by farmers over 10,000 years — now survive mostly in gene banks, not fields. The Green Revolution boosted yields, but at the cost of resilience, nutrition, and cultural memory.
The Preservation Layer
ICAR-NBPGR's National Gene Bank now conserves 4.52 lakh accessions — including approximately 92,000 indigenous varieties. Beej Bharat builds the missing digital layer above this: a public, farmer-facing registry that connects gene bank material to living farms.
The Farmer Layer
India has ~146 million operational farm holdings — 86% smallholder and marginal. They are the true custodians of genetic diversity. Beej Bharat provides them tools: identification, disease diagnosis, market access, fair pricing, and community exchange.
The Intelligence Layer
Plant Vision AI translates decades of agricultural science into a phone camera. Farmers photograph a leaf; the model returns variety, disease probability, and predicted yield. Every observation strengthens the network — a living map of Indian agriculture.
